Point…, aim…, shoot! Sounds simple enough, right? Well not when an industry that was once known for making countless hours in a dark room seem disturbingly normal becomes saturated with some of the most tech savvy photographers of our times. The need to excel and set yourself apart from the crowd is not only what’s desired, it’s pretty much a matter of survival.
What once started off as merely a hobby has certainly developed into a mainstay for Karl Ferguson in the past two years. With roots more associated with wearing multiple hats in the music industry, the decision to pick up the camera was purely out of necessity. “Well at the time many of the artists and djs that I had been working with were constantly running into photography issues. They needing professional photos for a million different promotional reasons, but we almost never had anyone around to shoot. So one day I just decided to pickup a camera and take a stab at it. I mean…how bad could it be? Lol”
And the rest, as they say, was history. Since then Karl has gone on to have his services contracted by such companies as Rolling Stone Magazine, VIBE magazine, The NBA (for the NBA lockout coverage), Centric/BET, Ciroc, Smirnoff, BMW, Hyundai, Sean John, Verizon Wireless, Metro PCS and Akoo just to name a few. “The craziest thing is that I still feel like a big kid with a lot of it, I’m just having fun enjoying where this takes me. No pressures, no expectations; I just want to keep growing over time. The beauty is knowing that the images you’re capturing have the ability to convey so many different meanings to so many different people. That’s when it becomes even bigger than you as a photographer and that’s the part I love”.
